Where did you do your A Levels?

Postby justontime » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:37 pm

Did you stay on at school for A Levels or did you go to college? I stayed at school because I was comfortable there and I knew and trusted the teaching staff. I did well, and I was happy, but I sometimes I wonder what sort of experience people had when they moved to college for A Levels.

I did mine at school as well. My sister did hers at college, and found there were so many distractions, like making new friends and getting to know the tutors that she didn't do well at all.

I can see that college may have distractions and there will be a period of adjustment. Some of my uni friends did well at college and seemed more ready for university.

I guess upbringing will have something to do with it. The more confident outgoing types who had a degree of independence from a younger age will do better than those from more strict backgrounds (such as me) who had little skill in dealing with being alone, and meeting new people.

Stav I think you are right. My sister had a friend who had very strict parents, even in sixth form they were on her case and she couldn't go out or have modern clothes, she even had to give up her music lessons to focus on her work. She got into uni to study medicine, but she had no skils and she was so imature that when she got to uni she went mad on the freedom, drank too much, couldn't cope and almost dropped out. I am so glad that I was gradually given more and more indepence, I feel better able to cope with uni than some of my friends.

That could almost be me Kernow! I gave up the clarinet when i started A levels and still regret it.

My strict upbringing also involved not going out etc. I did well at A levels at school though, and left as a confident young woman well able to handle uni.. I never did get into the drinking thing, and have never smoked either ordinary or 'herbal' cigarettes, although many of my peers did.

I do agree with you going to college is indeed causing lots of distractions from making new friends and getting acquainted with a new school and teacher so it is indeed a big adjustment to face which for me is not a good idea so I have stayed in school too wherein everything is not new and your already have loads of time to concentrate on the subject matters.
